Governor Abbott’s State Disaster Declaration

Governor Abbott's State Disaster Declaration

Moments ago we learned that Governor Greg Abbott has made a State Disaster Declaration for all counties in the State of Texas.

In addition, in order to make sure we have full capacity to respond to this disaster, dramatic increases in testing capabilities within the state are being made.  The first drive-thru testing facility opens today in San Antonio.  We are upscaling the number of tests available dramatically and quickly.  Our public health laboratories will be able to process 273 tests per day.  This is in additional to the private labs that are also processing the tests. This number will increase quickly.

Gov. Abbott wants to ensure that we are able to help local communities respond to their unique needs.  We are both concerned and encouraged with today’s response to this rapidly changing dynamic.

Governor Abbott stated that he is directing state agencies to restrict visitation at nursing homes, state sponsored homes, hospitals and day cares.  We must do all we can to protect our senior population and others in hospitals from COVID-19.

The best place for Texans to find information on COVID-19 is the Department of State Health Services website:

I will continue to keep you updated as information becomes available.

Please continue to join me in praying for all those affected, for an end to the spread of the virus, and for wisdom for all those who are making decisions in the days ahead.
