Five of 10 Iraqi Army Divisions Have Taken Principal Responsibility For Security
August 9, 2006: The Washington Post reports this morning U.S. military commanders on Tuesday handed over to their Iraqi counterparts primary security responsibility for a swath of northern territory extending from the foothills of Iraq 's eastern mountains all the way west to the Syrian border. Visiting U.S. and Iraqi officials hailed the transfer -- which will have no immediate effect on American troop levels in the area -- as a watershed moment in the gradual shift of military duties in Iraq from U.S. forces to this country's nascent army. They also expressed optimism over stepped-up security operations in Baghdad, where military spokesmen announced Tuesday that a new phase of a U.S.-Iraqi crackdown on violence had begun.

A Milestone In The Dem Transition From Strength To Defeatism
August 9, 2006: Last night marked a final turning point for the Democrat Party. The Connecticut primary victory of Cut-and-Run candidate Ned Lamont over Senator Joe Lieberman proved there is no longer room in the Democrat Party for principled leaders willing to take a stand against terrorism. Witness the downward spiral the Party has taken here.

In just three years, coalition forces have helped the Iraqi people see the end to a dangerous dictator, and discover the freedom of Democracy. We have stopped countless terrorists, including Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, whose sole aim was ending innocent lives. We are working towards a stable democracy in the heart of an oppressive Middle East. But that task is difficult - and it's easy for defeatists with political motives, like Ned Lamont, to claim that things are just too ugly to continue and accomplish our goals. But after so much progress, we cannot turn backs without finishing the job. A free and peaceful Iraq, fully in control of its own security, will permanently change the Middle East for the better.

President Bush To Sign Law Helping Families Save For College
August 8, 2006: The Wall Street Journal reports this morning "Investors in 529 college-savings plans received some good news with Congress's decision to make some of their most-attractive features permanent. The changes were included in sweeping pension legislation last week that affects many types of popular retirement accounts, from traditional employer-sponsored pension plans to 401(k) plans. President Bush is expected to sign it into law soon. Assets in the plans rose sharply when the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 made 529 withdrawals completely tax-free when used for college expenses, among other provisions. But the law was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2010.

Opening Up ANWR For Oil Drilling Will Provide Crucial Relief
August 8, 2006: The Wall Street Journal editorializes this morning Opponents of opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling have long argued that the supply wouldn't make a difference to prices. Well, that claim took a spill yesterday with BP's announcement that it is shutting down its operations at Prudhoe Bay due to a damaged pipeline that could take months to patch. U.S. crude soared $2.25 on the news, taking oil to nearly $77 a barrel. This market reaction came as some surprise to various newspaper scribes and politicians, given that Prudhoe Bay only supplies about 400,000 barrels a day, or less than 2% of daily U.S. oil consumption. These are the same folks who've delighted in informing Americans in recent years that opening up nearby ANWR to drilling would only result in an extra one million barrels a day. As it happens, House Republicans are mounting yet another effort to get ANWR legislation past John Kerry and his fellow Senate filibusterers. A majority of the Senate supports it.

Democrats Cozy Up To Uber-Liberal Loony George Soros
August 8, 2006: Newsday.com reports this morning that on Aug. 19, Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean hosts a $10,000-per-guest fundraiser at the Southampton estate of financier George Soros.

In a June 2006 article in Newsweek, Soros wholly discounted the War on Terror, saying By declaring a 'war on terror' after September the 11th, we set the wrong agenda for the world." Soros believes the main obstacle to a stable and just world is the United States and clearly his friend Howard Dean must not disagree.
